JENNY’S JOURNEY REFLECTS OUR MISSION

At Charleston Oncology, the mission of healing all people with compassion, faith and excellence resonates through the hallways and translates into every patient interaction. Through these corridors of care walks Jenny Childs, a veteran teammate whose dedication to caring for cancer patients has made an indelible mark on both her colleagues and the many lives she has touched.

In 2008, Jenny began her tenure in the front office of Charleston Oncology, her smile the first dose of comfort for those braving their battle with cancer. Dax recognized Jenny early for her empathy and commitment, promoting her to the pharmacy department. “It feels like I’m part of each patient’s story,” Jenny said, emphasizing the vital role that the pharmacy plays in the continuum of care. “Patients arrive overwhelmed and seeking guidance. I walk them through their medication process and advancements in treatments as a part of their care team.”

Barely a year on the job, an unsettling personal discovery would put Jenny in the very seats of those she served. A self-exam led to a shock: She had breast cancer. Suddenly, she was both advocate and patient, navigating the same uncertain terrain as those she comforted. “I don’t think I would have caught it as early if I hadn’t worked here,” Jenny reflected. The support was immediate and all-encompassing. “Dr. Geils and everyone moved swiftly. Any needs I had were met. I was surrounded by people entrenched in cancer care. Anytime I had a question, I was five steps from someone who had answers.”

Jenny’s story is a testament to Charleston Oncology’s mission statement. The sheer mention of cancer can unravel the strongest spirits, but it’s the human touch offered here that weaves them back together. The pharmacy, as Jenny said, is more than a dispensary; it’s a sanctuary of assurance against worry and fear.

For Jenny, being a guiding light within Charleston Oncology extends beyond just fulfilling her job responsibilities as lead pharmacy technician. It’s about witnessing the triumphs, large and small, and celebrating the victories of those who have embarked on a formidable voyage. “I love being there for people’s success stories. I love what we do,” she shared. Her own experience as a patient further galvanized her commitment. It is people like her who embody an organization centered on compassionate care.
